3…2..1…LIFT OFF for GRAVITY 04

On 20 January, the fourth round of GRAVITY Challenge launched, a global space innovation program connecting businesses with real world problems, with the space technology experts who can solve them.

Think better understanding how whales can assist in the fight against climate change, instant claims to those affected by natural disaster events, containing livestock disease outbreaks, helping banking customers understand their emissions footprint, and more.

The challenge has become so successful in past years, it has now expanded to include participants from around the world, making it one of the furthest reaching space innovation programs globally. For the first time, GRAVITY Challenge is excited to share challenges from Canadian and Japanese organisations in the round 04 intake.

Applications are now open for innovators seeking to participate in this round of the program, closing on 8 February 2022. Successful teams will work on their solutions with the challenger organisations until 18 May. Challenge Champions – teams who will move into scaling conversations with organisations – will be announced 8 June.

Space tech enthusiasts from Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Luxemburg, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Romania, and the Czech Republic are invited to participate.

Round 04 Challenges

The South Australian Department for Infrastructure and Transport (Australia) wants to identify new ways to assess the condition of its road assets, using space capabilities to develop more effective predictive asset models, improving the maintenance planning process for the state

Agrifutures Australia and Animal Health Australia are looking to use space capability to create the ability to plan for and contain livestock emergency animal disease and natural disaster events.

 

Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company (Japan) wants to use satellite imagery to develop an on-the-spot claim assessment and payment system in response to natural disaster events.

NatWest Group (UK) wants to use space data to help its business customers understand their emissions footprints and what positive actions they can take to reduce their impact. The challenge is to create a way to combine a range of disparate data sets so they can be used flexibly for different customers and help them transition to a net zero economy.

Whale and Dolphin Conservation (UK) wants to bring together data sources to help harness the growing appreciation of how whales stimulate phytoplankton growth and sequester carbon as a new route to unlocking ‘deep blue carbon’ and potentially kickstarting a new market for climate investment and restoration.

Statistics Canada – Agricultural Division (Canada) wants to use earth observation data to better classify, detect and measure activity for Canadian greenhouse businesses.

Statistics Canada – MMAD (Canada) wants to better determine if new construction has started on municipally approved land for development projects with a small footprint.
