Data Provider Spotlight: Spire

Spire is a valued data provider of the GRAVITY Challenge. An organisation founded on a common desire to build a better planet, we were excited to have the opportunity to sit down with them and understand their involvement in GRAVITY and in the space industry.

Who is Spire and what do you do?

Spire is the trusted source of data powering the most innovative organizations in the Maritime, Aviation, Weather, Space, and Government sectors. Spire provides global data with the coverage, quality, and performance needed for mission-critical applications and taps advanced technologies to enable innovation, drive new ideas, and improve enterprise processes. Spire’s unrivalled coverage is collected using an ever-expanding constellation of satellites and dynamic data sources. Spire solutions are delivered in easy to use live feeds, API's, and data files and include full documentation and support.

Why did Spire want to be involved in the GRAVITY Challenge?

As a global, mission-driven company, Spire is excited to support the Gravity Challenge and Deloitte’s efforts to foster the use of space technology to solve real-world problems. At Spire, we believe data plays a vital role in activities that improve the planet and keep people safe and informed. Whether we are providing accurate weather forecasts to minimize the impact of natural disasters, or location data to protect assets, optimize efficiency, and mitigate risk, we empower our customers to address our planet’s toughest challenges with deliberate speed.

At Spire, we imagine a thriving world of sustainable abundance – and we believe insights and information from the ultimate vantage point—space—about our current world, can help us build a better one, by placing previously unavailable knowledge about Earth into the hands of decision-makers so they can lead, act and plan with confidence. Spire uses data about every point on Earth to solve global problems and unlock human potential.

Does Spire have any exciting projects on the horizon?

At Spire, we consider this to be the age of super data. Moving forward, data will be used for purposes beyond just human ability.  Data can help us make that next leap toward a healthier planet and beyond (view video above).

With a rapidly expanding number of use cases and business models leveraging space-based data, Spire data is being used to tackle global challenges large and small and help industries thrive while decreasing carbon emissions and ensuring human safety.

What is exciting about being in the Space industry right now?

We hear so much about the billionaire space race. Space, right now, is about using space-based data to solve difficult challenges on earth, like climate change. Climate change is on everyone’s mind and the data depicts our planet changing at a rapid rate, signalling an urgent need for all people to make changes to their day-to-day activities. We believe Spire data provides actionable insights that lead to greater operational efficiencies for industries operating on land, sea, and air.

“By providing a global picture of asset movements and local weather predictions, Spire can provide decisional information that not only provides maximum routing fuel efficiency but provides warning of severe conditions that can cause extreme damage and loss of life.” -Robert Sproles, Senior Director, Constellation Planning and Operations at Spire

What is something people might not know about Spire?

Spire was formed by founders from three different countries that were united by a common desire to build a better planet. Information about the earth and its environment were traditionally collected from ground networks and satellite imagery, Spire set out to do something different and created a vast network of nanosatellites orbiting just above Earth’s atmosphere. Our satellites collect rich, granular data from space and we clean, sort, and refine this data into relevant solutions for our customers. At Spire, we’re reaching toward a world where commerce coexists with nature. Where economies flourish to support thriving families and safer communities. Where no child goes hungry, and no wild creature is driven to extinction. Our global teams work with our customers to achieve these ambitious goals every day.
